Penelope is a classic yacht, Bermuda-rigged sloop, launched in 1965. She belongs to the Palinodie class and was designed by Olin Stephens and Rod Stephens of the renowned Sparkman & Stephens studio. She was built at the La Spezia Naval Base. Her principal dimensions are: length overall 12.198 m, beam 3.062 m, and sail area 96.81 m². She was restored at the Cantiere Valdettaro. Penelope joined the AIVE circuit only in 2021, the year in which she was transferred from the Sailing Section of the Scuola Sottufficiali della Mari-na Militare in La Maddalena—where she had been used for the training of new boatswains of the Italian Navy—to the Sailing Section of the Italian Navy in La Spezia. She made her debut with a class victory at the Vele d’Epoca regatta during the International Sailing Week - Naval Academy and City of Livorno 2021 Her record of achievements has since been enriched by recent victories including the Trofeo Olin Stephens (2025), the two Challenger Valdettaro trophies in 2025 at Le Grazie and the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea - Assonautica La Spezia challenge in La Spe-zia, as well as second place in the AIVE Tyrrhenian Cup.
